What I Heard When I Listened
When I first envisioned Sistahs Connect® Radio, it was a deeply personal passion project. I wanted a space where I could simply press play and be uplifted—a soundtrack of neo-soul, R&B, inspirational messages, and women’s voices that would pour into me throughout the day. It was never about launching a full-on station. It was about healing, joy, and good vibes in the background while I worked and created.
But as with all things rooted in love and purpose, it grew.
Last week, I hosted a focus group with a phenomenal group of women—my trusted tribe—and the experience reaffirmed something I already knew deep down: when Black women come together with intention, something powerful always unfolds.
Some of the beautiful reflections shared during the session still replay in my mind:
“My creative flow is on point when I tune in.”
“The station just does it for me. It does something for my spirit.”
“It’s a safe listening experience.”
“Every song that comes on, I say, that’s my jam!”
“If I were to turn on your station for the whole day in my home or my office and just do whatever—work a little bit, eat, take a nap, exercise—and your station played throughout the day, it would be a safe intake of energy.”
“Thank you for giving us music for the soul.”
Those words meant everything.
In celebration of Black Business Month, many of the women from the focus group are now being featured on the station throughout August with their one-minute business promos. It’s one small way to shine a light on their brilliance and remind us all of the power of community, collaboration, and voice.
I’m thrilled to introduce the first two fresh voices joining the rotation on Sistahs Connect® Radio. Shades of Black with Shirl kicks off Monday, August 11th at 9 a.m., and Unmute Your Mic with Coach Lauren J joins the rotation every Wednesday at 9 a.m. Tune in and be inspired!
This morning, as I was adding new content to the lineup, I took a moment to pause and listen. I wanted to truly hear what this vision of mine had become over the last six months. And what I heard warmed my heart. It felt really good to pause and truly soak in how far I’ve come.
Then I glanced at the dashboard and saw listeners tuning in from New Jersey, New York, Texas, and Virginia. In that moment, I was reminded that I’m not the only one who craves starting the day with music and messages that nourish the spirit.
Sistahs Connect® Radio may have started as a personal project, but it’s blossoming into a collective experience. And I’m so thankful for every woman who’s helping shape what it’s becoming.
We’re just getting started.
